Provence & Mt Ventoux bike tour day by day
Day 1 – Rendezvous Avignon
We’ll rendezvous in Avignon, the ‘capital’ of la Provence region and home to the papal throne between 1309 and 1377. Many of you will arrive a day early to explore this lively town. Your guides will pick you us at the Avignon train station or airport between 12-3 pm for the transfer to our country retreat for the next 5 nights. Bike fit/assembly and a short shake down ride in the vineyards.
Day 2 – Dentelles de Montmirail Loop
A good introduction to cycling Provence, enjoy a fantastic 60 km fast loop ride into the Baronnie hills, through Vaison-la-Romaine and past the important Cotes-du-Rhone wine villages of Gigondas and Vacqueyras. We’ll have two scenic pesky climbs taking us into the spectacular Dentelles de Montmirail before descending back to Malaucene. This morning we’ll ride a 45-mile local’s cycling route on quiet roads through the dramatic craggy hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail. We’ll loop north warming up on flatter roads past the wine villages of Vacqueyras and Gigondas before turning into Montmirail for 2 small pesky climbs. Ride: 85 km/5,000+’ or 55km/2800′. Optional morning run/walk through the vineyards.
Day 3 – Mont Ventoux & Gorges de la Nesque
Today we’ll spin up the ‘classic’ climb of Mt. Ventoux! Often featured in the Tour de France and Dauphine Libere, the approach from Bedoin is considered the most difficult: twenty-one relentless kilometers; 5,280′ vertical climbing; between 7-11% grade . After sufficient sugar and taking in the panoramic views from the summit, an awesome and well-deserved descent takes you to the lavender-fields of Sault and through the rock tunnels of the Gorges de la Nesque. This loop rates as one of the finest in France! Your afternoon is open for degustation (wine tasting), cafés or lounging by the pool
Ride: 115 km, 7,500′ climbing.
Day 4 – Col d’Ey Recovery Loop
Today is intentionally shorter to allow the legs to recover from Ventoux. We’ll ride beautiful undulating roads on the east side of Ventoux through progressively smaller medieval villages. Two smaller passes dot the course including the Col d’Ey featured in the 2009 Tour de France. Ride: 60 km, 4,000′ (with options for more or less).
Day 5 – Vallée de l’Ouvèze & Gorges de la Toulerenc
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll transition to the bike for a 55 mile endurance pace ride along the Valle du Toulourenc . The terrain is rolling hills through fruit orchards, river gorges and a few ‘cols’ (mountain passes). It’s a beautiful and relatively hilly morning crossing into the Drome, past the Chateau du Auban descending into the Gorges de la Toulerenc. Ride: 96 km, 4800′. (For those with the legs & desire, option to go up north side of Ventoux from Malaucene.)
Day 6 – Merci
Wake up for a leisurely breakfast. We’ll have a coordinated transfer back to Avignon TGV station or airport at 9:00 am for your connections home.
